Stop COVID-19 - Get Vaccinated!

Everyone wants COVID-19 to be gone and have life get back to normal – whatever normal will be when this is over.

That won’t happen until a substantial number of the population is vaccinated.  But the reluctance to get vaccinated is growing.  There is a sizable number of people that have an irrational fear of negative side effects from the vaccine. Some are waiting for everyone else to get vaccinated so they don’t have to.  Others worry that the science with the newer mRNA vaccines is too new and they worry about side effects far down the road.   There are people who are complaining that it’s a violation of their right to choose.

It’s anyone’s guess as to why there is such hesitancy with some.   But one thing is for sure: COVID-19 is EVERYONE’S problem.    The virus doesn’t care about your right to choose, your fear of the science, or your lack of caring about the rest of mankind.  It can infect you at any time.   One  may think “I’ve made it this far, I won’t get it.”  That’s simply moronic thinking.   COVID-19 continues to mutate into more contagious variants.   Those variants are likely causing the large spike in cases in Michigan, and also the tragic surge in India where 300,000+ people A DAY in the last few days have contracted the virus.  There’s no telling as of this writing how many in India have died or will die because their hospital system is overwhelmed with COVID patients and they don’t have enough oxygen to treat everyone.   They are BEGGING for the vaccine while many Americans are backing away from it.

The best way to help yourself, your fellow Americans, and the world, is to get vaccinated.  I’ve received both doses of the vaccine and the side effects were minimal: a sore arm with the first and second shot, and some tiredness with the second.   It was worth the feeling to be protected and to help stop the spread of this horrific virus.

Do your part to stop COVID-19. Get vaccinated!

Joe Biden For President

I haven’t written much here in the last year.   The Trump administration has been a steady stream of craziness and I realized early on I had no hope of keeping up with writing about everything wrong with it.

With the 2020 presidential election a week away, I thought it was time to help anyone who was still undecided to decide.

Vote for Joe Biden.   Joe Biden will bring stability and sanity back to our government.

Let me outline what’s wrong with the current Trump administration. If you are still undecided, this is a clue that  something is wrong with the current administration, otherwise it would be an easy choice for you to vote for them, right?    The things that are wrong with the Trump administration – and Donald Trump himself – are glaring, in my opinion.  First and foremost,  his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has been pathetic, and now, as of this writing, over 225,000 Americans are dead from it and overall cases in the U.S. are nearing 9 million.   Had Donald Trump not minimized the risk early on, had he directed the country as a whole on a shut down quickly, had he closed off international travel faster, had he not ignored the pandemic playbook already put in place by the Obama administration - just to name a few things -we would not be in this predicament now.    If you’re complaining that your children  are still learning remotely, if you still must wear a mask in public, if you’re still required to socially distance, if you’re still having trouble getting supplies, and if your business is still trying to recover from being shut down months ago or worse yet, has closed completely, blame Donald Trump and his administration.    By the way, Trump himself  had COVID and he had at the White House in late September that is now called a super-spreader event.

There’s much more wrong with Trump and his administration than just COVID.  There is the constant stream of hateful, childish, and inaccurate tweets from the president.  I would be here for days just outlining the falsehoods spoken by the president.   Even social media, such as Twitter, is flagging some of Trump’s tweets because they are misleading.  What does this say about a president?   Trump has fanned the flames of hatred in the U.S. and I don’t think this country can handle even another year of his kind of division between the American people.  I can’t even begin to outline how the United States is viewed in other countries, other than we’ve become and international joke.   If Donald Trump can’t handle tough questions from the likes of Leslie Stahl on 60 Minutes (he walked out of the interview), he surely can’t handle tough negotiations with world leaders.

Joe Biden will bring stability, respectability, and rationality to our government.   Will things be perfect right out of the gate? Probably not.  There is a lot to fix after the last four years of the Trump administration.  But one thing is clear, 4 more years of what Donald Trump has been doing will fix nothing.  Trump has had 4 years to keep his promises to “Make America Great Again” and Trump has failed miserably.    The only thing that will help us out of this mess is  Joe Biden.  I urge you to vote for change and for a healthy American by casting your vote for Joe Biden.

Protect Yourself – Wear A Mask, Social Distance, Wash Your Hands!

Many states have re-opened after shut-downs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of those states were late to put in restrictions. Unfortunately, some people have used these re-openings as an excuse to go completely back to normal: no social distancing, no mask wearing.

That's a mistake.

Cases of COVID-19 are surging, and hospitalizations are rising. There are people who attribute the surge to an increase in testing, but that explanation doesn’t hold when looking at the  increase in  hospitalizations. The number of COVID-19 positive people being hospitalized has zero relation to the number of tests being conducted.

COVID-19 remains highly contagious and a serious illness. Do yourself a favor and PROTECT YOURSELF from those people who don’t care whether they get the virus or spread it to others. Wear a mask when you are out in public. Continue to stay away from large crowds. Wash your hands after being out in public and keep your hands away from your face unless you know your hands are clean. And when you do have to go out to shop for groceries or anything else, respect the personal space of others and keep 6 feet away. Others may not care if they get the virus, but it’s up to YOU to protect your own health and the health of those that you love.

This is not about your rights – show some concern for your fellow human beings! The only way COVID-19 can be stopped is if some people stop being selfish. Protect yourself and help protect others. Wear a mask in public. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. It’s not hard to do!

This Surreal COVID-19 World

It’s been a few years since I’ve written anything for this blog. There was – and still is – so much bad news with the Trump administration that I’d be glued to my computer, writing all day just to keep up. I had no desire to spend my time with such a flood of negativity.

But the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic brings me out of retirement as things become more bizarre by the day. It’s like living in an old Twilight Zone episode, but in color.

COVID-19 has proved to be highly contagious and deadly, and trying to both evade it and to halt its spread has changed how we live. It’s a surreal world.

Social distancing – staying at least 6 feet away from others – began here in Ohio very early in March. Schools were closed and large gatherings were discouraged.  Large events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade were canceled. To make sure that people didn’t decide to hit the bars instead, those were closed too, along with restaurants, in order to prevent groups of people gathering. (Carry-out is still allowed.) Hairdressers, salons, and tattoo parlors were also shut down.  Even the Catholic Church told people not to come to services. The hope was that people would stay home or not congregate in groups,  discouraging the spread of the virus. Hand washing after being out in public for anything was a must, and then more hand washing, and more hand washing…

Very early in this process, the hoarders were unleashed and certain items like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, isopropyl alcohol, and face masks disappeared from stores everywhere. People were told that face masks weren’t necessary, and that masks should be reserved for medical personnel and first responders to help keep them safe. (This would later change.) Anything that was purchased at a store should be wiped down and/or disinfected once brought home. Anything those things touched – like grocery bags on your kitchen counter – should be disinfected and the bags tossed out. Overnight, a new breed of germophobes was born.

It wasn’t long before Ohio officially shut down all non-essential businesses and stressed that people should be staying home unless to go out for essentials like food. Grocery shopping, which already was difficult because of that 6-feet guideline, became more stressful as store shelves emptied quickly of everything else like milk, eggs, meats, soup, etc. The grocery stores are still trying to recover, and it may be some time before inventories get back up to normal. More people are making their own meals and eating at home, which alone stressed inventory levels at the grocery stores. Many stores later decided to put limits of certain items to prevent further hoarding and to help insure that everybody may have a chance to get critical items. (Toilet paper is still hard to get.) I never thought I’d see the day where I’d go into a grocery store week after week and see so many shelves looking sparse or bare.

Now that we’ve been instructed that we SHOULD wear a mask when going out to shop, grocery shopping has become even more surreal. Even with the 6 foot distance between us, now with our mouths covered, we can’t even smile at our fellow shoppers, and instead flee when anyone comes too close.   Stores are limiting how many people can be in a store at one time to minimize contact. Going out for groceries or any essentials is anxiety-filled and depressing.

While all this is going on, we are assaulted with constant news of the spread of COVID-19 and the resulting illnesses and death. Some states, slow to enact social distancing and closing of businesses were hit very hard, especially dense populated areas like New York City and New York state. Hot spots began to pop up – such as New Orleans, possibly because of the large gathering from Mardi Gras. Watching the news has been a constant stream of COVID-19 news and it can become overwhelming.

One positive benefit – fewer cars are on the road and fewer airplanes are flying, so the air appears clearer.

President Trump initially downplayed the virus When it became obvious that this real, he was forced to react. I think it’s too little to late. Now we must listen to his daily, rambling press briefings and his words don’t offer much substance or solace.  It's alarming.

Clearly the effects of COVID-19 are not over yet, but life as we know it has changed, probably forever. It may be hard to go out in public to shop without looking at others as they are riddled with unknown germs. This virus will probably turn many people into antisocial germophobes. And there will be some items that people may be tempted to overbuy in the future, just to be sure they have some on hand in case of another emergency (e.g. toilet paper!).

I have high hopes that all this effort will put an end to this virus, or at least slow it down enough so the medical profession can better react, and to buy some time until a vaccine is developed. But one thing I know for sure: things will never be the same.

Trump as the “Law and Order” President? Hardly

I haven’t written anything in months. Truthfully, the Trump presidency has been such a train wreck that if I started posting my opinions, I would never stop writing. That does not mean I’ve taken my eyes off what Trump has been doing – and not doing.

He’s not doing anything constructive. His administration and the Republican controlled Congress hasn’t been able to get anything done. Their attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) fizzled miserably. This was in part to the Republicans being tone-deaf as to what the people of the United States want and need. The fact that Trump's coziness with Russia plus his namesake son getting himself tangled in alleged illegal activity in June of 2016 and then lying about it hasn’t helped either. The steady drip, drip, drip of information which only revealed more lies on Trump Jr.’s part was bad enough, but today there are reports that Donald Trump – the president - has raised the issue to his legal team about pardons – for himself, his family and others related to the investigation. He's also expressed regret for putting Jeff Sessions in the job as Attorney General because Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation.  So much for law and order!

A president simply cannot pardon himself; this would be what a dictator would do. And. it appears that if he pardons any member of his family, campaign staff, or administration, as it relates to the investigation of the Russian meddling in the election, those people would not be allowed to plead the Fifth Amendment when testifying and/or would not be protected from any other charges outside the Federal level. Again, so much for "law and order."

The bottom line is Donald Trump is acting like a guilty person trying to find any way to keep himself out of jail.

I can only hope at this point that the investigation into Trump and his campaign’s activity moves at light speed and impeachment proceedings take place with (hopefully) a quick decision on the part of Congress to boot Trump out of office. I don’t think this country can suffer the damage much longer. Trump’s “law and order” sounds like “NO law and order.”

Trump’s Twitter Storm (Falsely) Accuses Obama of Wiretapping

President Donald Trump had a Saturday morning tweet storm on March 4, 2017. Here’s what he said, in five tweets:

“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy! "

"I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!"

"Is it legal for a sitting President to be "wire tapping" a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!"

"Just out: The same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone."

"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

Of course, Trump had no proof to back up his claims, which were quickly rebuked by an Obama spokesperson.

These tweets show Trump’s ignorance. A president cannot order wiretaps; those laws have been on the books since the 1970s after the Nixon era. But Trump is now in a trap of his own making. He can’t prove his allegations, which make him seem even more paranoid and crazy. If there WERE wiretaps, they would have been initiated by federal investigators and been approved by a panel of judges who set the bar very high in order for a wiretap to be granted. This would mean that Trump and/or members of his campaign showed some signs of illegal activity. Either way, Trump loses.

I’m all for investigating Trump’s (baseless) claims, which could have the side benefit of uncovering the truth about his and/or his campaign’s ties to Russia. Trump’s Twitter rant should only expedite an investigation, something that I doubt he really wants. I am appalled at Trump’s apparent lack on control and also his desire to vomit his often wild opinions onto Twitter on a regular basis. He may think he is diverting attention from the issue of his ties to Russia, but his apparent insecurities have only drawn more attention to it. In my opinion, this is not the sign of a person with a stable mind. I encourage Congress or any federal agency to open an investigation into these claims that Obama wiretapped Trump, and when they are proven false, they can then open an investigation into President Trump’s mental ability to govern.

Trump’s ”Extreme Vetting” is an Extreme Disaster

President Donald Trump created another mess in his first week in the White House. His campaign promise of “extreme vetting” of immigrants took an ugly turn when he issued an executive order banning the entry into the United States for citizens of seven Muslim nations (Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen) without having any process or procedure in place.

Chaos ensued during the execution of the haphazard executive order. There was no advance notice or planning for the airports to enforce the order. Green card holders were blocked entry, some people with valid U.S. passports were threatened with deportations until judges intervened. Large numbers of protesters descended on major airports, as did lawyers there to protect the rights of those detained and to help them through the process.

It was a disaster.

The Trump administration has failed miserably in its first week. It seems that this group of people who have zero experience in running the government are just making things up as they go along. It’s unprofessional and it is frightening. In their desire to keep a campaign promise of “extreme vetting”, they completely forgot to actually come up with a process to vet people coming in to the country. There was no preparation before executing. Trump always touts his business prowess, but no smart business person would ever change their operating process or profile without having a plan in place.

It’s clear to me that Trump is just winging it. Same for his administration. I’m becoming worried that our government is in the hands of a madman, along with a staff ready and willing to enable him.

Donald Trump – The Twilight Zone President

After Donald J. Trump was elected president in November, the last few months felt like a never-ending episode of “The Twilight Zone”. I sometimes expected Rod Serling to appear as a ghostly apparition and give an opening monologue to every news cast. Not a day goes by without the press highlighting some of the lies and falsehoods that are coming from Trump and his administration. Not 24 hours passed after the inauguration, President Trump and his Press Secretary Sean Spicer made incorrect statements about the size of the crowd attending the inauguration. Spicer flat out lied, stating incorrectly that “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period”,  after which he didn’t take questions from the press. The full transcript is here:”Washington Post: Sean Spicer held a press conference. He didn’t take questions. Or tell the whole truth. “ .

The next day, on NBC's "Meet The Press", one of Trumps advisors, Kellyanne Conway, attempted to categorize the falsehoods as “alternative facts” (see the clip below). She also said she may have to “rethink our relationship”, a clear threat, in my opinion, to cutting off members of the press when the Trump administration doesn't like when the press calls them out for their lies.

The entire campaign has been full of lies, misstatements, falsehoods, and any other synonym one can think of for not being truthful.

Donald Trump and his support staff seem ill-prepared for the job. Their attitude continues to be hostile. I am embarrassed that these people represent the United Stated of America.

I’ve been silent for all these months;  if I wrote down everything that appalled me about this president’s and his staff’s behavior, I would be writing 24/7. I had to step back in the hopes that once inauguration day came, that I would see Trump and his administration grow up. Clearly, this won’t he happening any time soon.

It’s going to be a long, long 4 years… in The Twilight Zone.

Trump Wins, To The Dismay of Half The Population

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, but Donald Trump won the electoral votes. The whole electoral college issue will get dredged up again but I'll save that analysis for another day. (I wrote something on the electoral college in 2008: The Electoral College: Is It Necessary? )

The people have spoken, but the outcome was not what the majority of the people wanted.

Everyone put a lot of energy, heart, and soul into this election.  But it seemed to lack BRAINS. It’s hard to fathom how a candidate whose messages were tinged with bigotry, exclusion, and misogyny could have been elected to the highest office in the United States.

But here we are, and the cold hard fact is that we now have to live with it.

After spending the last 8+ years reading the repeated hateful rants of strangers, friends, and family about their dislike of Barack Obama as a candidate and as a president, I refuse to let the outcome of this election get me down. I don't want to be like those people who could never get over that election loss and who went out of their way to put down people who voted for Obama.

This doesn’t mean that I will be silent on things that I don’t like about our new president. My expectation will be as high as always. But I am not going to go into this new presidency with a chip on my shoulder from day one. I don’t have the energy for that and I don’t think it serves any good purpose.

I don’t know what this new leadership will bring but only hope that millions of Trump voters don’t find that they’ve been sold a 4 year supply of “snake oil.”  This country simply can't afford it.

Hillary Clinton For President – I’m With Her

I’m with her. The choice is easy. Her decades of experience makes Hillary Clinton perfect for the job as president. Some may think she is polarizing but I do not; if anything, she’s the only person with the political savvy to be able to bridge the gap between all parties. Any baggage that she carries mostly comes from her husband Bill’s past, and he isn’t the one running for president. She’s consistently demonstrated calm and rational thinking, plus grace under pressure.

I could have had a full time job the last few months simply focusing on Donald Trump’s gaffes. But why spend my time on an over-saturated topic? At first, the media trotted out Trump like a side-show freak, normalizing his outrageous behavior and comments. Finally, they realized they may have helped this buffoon actually reach the highest office in the country, and now the floodgates have opened. Trump, of course, isn’t smart enough to see this happen and with each day, he keeps digging himself deeper in a hole. This pleases me greatly and only helps my candidate more.

Donald Trump should have never been nominated. The end result of his nomination is a Republican Party in a state of implosion. If the Republicans want to be considered seriously in the future, they need to have a far better vetting process before they even present any candidates for consideration for president. The first qualification should be for any potential candidate to submit their tax returns for review, something that we are still waiting for Trump to do.  (Thankfully, someone leaked  one of his old returns, and it was a damning picture of Trump's business losses.)

Here’s hoping that November will bring a win for Hillary Clinton. Our country needs her.

Trump’s Outrageous Florida Press Conference

Donald Trump held a press conference today at the Doral Resort in Florida. I rarely watch these types of press conferences but I happened to be flipping through channels and landed on MSNBC just as it began to air. While watching, I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or be very afraid. In the conference,  Trump urges Russian hackers to find Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails; he doesn’t seem to know the difference between the Geneva Conventions and NATO; and he tells a female reporter to “be quiet.” And this is only the tip of the iceberg. I watched the entire conference as Trump went on a stream of consciousness rant which seemed very angry, peppered with name-calling. I found myself wondering if he could even hold up under the pressures of a debate with Hillary Clinton? I continue to be concerned that someone with his apparent lack of verbal control has come so far in a presidential election. What kind of people are seriously thinking of voting for Trump? Is this reflective of what some think is the dumbing down of America or the world? Is Trump speaking to the lowest common denominator in human beings?

Clearly I won’t be voting for him in November. If you missed the press conference, it is embedded below. It’s long but once you start watching, it’s hard to stop as Trump seems to go off the rails many times with rants. There is nothing presidential about his behavior in this press conference.

Note: skip forward about 33 minutes to the actual start of the conference

We Must Find A Solution to the Gun Problem

Last August, I posted my opinion on gun control ( The Frequent Critic: “Guns Plus Mental Illness – A Recipe For Disaster” ) I had no answers but said we must find a solution.

The recent mass shooting in Orlando Florida where 49 people were shot and killed by a lone gunman – who also ended up dead at the hands of police – has brought the whole issue of gun control to a head. The Boston Globe published a powerful front page with an AR-15 assault rifle like the one used by the killer, with the headline “Make It Stop.”

It is a succinct but powerful message.

I do believe in a person’s right to bear arms, but I am sure that the framers of The Constitution never had assault rifles in mind.

We must make these senseless killings stop, and the best way to do it is to control access to these weapons. I still don’t have all the answers here but there must be enough great minds in this country to come up with something.

We need to MAKE IT STOP.

Deflect & Evade: Donald Trump’s Idiotic Strategy

I’ve been trying to keep out of the political fray until the Democratic and Republican candidates for the president have been selected. But the wackiness of Donald’s Trump’s candidacy is making that impossible.

How this person, who does nothing but deflect and evade issues or questions, can get this far in the race is beyond me. How this person, who has made headlines by making demeaning comments about women, can be supported by any woman is a mystery. How this person, who preaches nothing but intolerance toward people of other faiths or nations, can even be considered for the highest elected office in the United States is frightening.

Yet here we are. While Donald Trump hasn’t as yet been crowned as the Republican nominee, it is shocking that someone can even make it into the lead this late in the game. It make me wonder about the intelligence of the people who are voting for him.

It appears that the media, which gave Trump so much coverage early on and handled him with kid gloves in order not to alienate him, has realized that possibly they helped create this monster by not calling Trump out earlier on his outrageous statements. But today, and on The Today Show, it’s clear that the gloves are off and the media is now challenging Trump for his statements. In an interview this morning on the Today Show, embedded below, it clearly shows that Trump’s strategy of deflect and evade won’t work anymore. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie challenged Trump’s statements and it was obvious that Trump was flustered, angry, and painted into a corner. I can only hope this is a turning point for his candidacy, and that voters in primaries and participants in caucuses will cast their vote for someone other than Donald Trump, driving the choice of the Republican candidate to the convention in Cleveland Ohio in July 2016.

Supreme Court Vacancy: The Republicans Go Off The Deep End

I’ve been absent here for several months. I got tired of the political rhetoric coming out of the Republican Party. So much craziness was coming out of the mouths of Donald Trump and the other candidates that if I started writing about it, it would never end.

But the death yesterday of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was the tipping point for me. Not his death per se, but the Republican response that says President Barack Obama should defer making his recommendation for replacement and leave that for the next president. Some Republicans stated openly that they would not vote on, or they would block, any appointment that President Obama recommended.

This is garbage, pure and simple.

Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that the president "shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint ... Judges of the Supreme Court." This means President Obama is well within his rights to put forth his nomination for Scalia's replacement. Members of Congress swear to uphold the Constitution. If the President makes his recommendation, Congress should vote on it. Of course, they do not need to approve The President’s selection, but in my opinion, NOT to vote on it should not be an option.

Those Republicans who want to block or delay the appointment of a replacement Supreme Court Justice in order to allow the next president to do so should remember that there are no guarantees a Republican will win the next presidential election.

I grow tired of Republicans, who are behaving like petulant children who throw tantrums when they don’t get their way. Those already in Congress should be aware that they represent the people - ALL the people, not just their own party or their own self interests. And those candidates running for president who are not currently members of Congress better get used to the fact that, if elected, they also have to represent ALL people AND uphold the Constitution.

The Republican presidential candidates continue to make themselves look more foolish by the day. It’s embarrassing.

Guns Plus Mental Illness – A Recipe For Disaster

There have been too many killings lately at the hands of people with guns who are mentally ill. I have no issue with people having their guns, but there needs to be some way to prevent people who do not have the capacity to use them properly to get them and keep them.

We are a country of many freedoms, but we also need to be able to protect people from those who are abusing those freedoms. The problem is: a person may be mentally stable when they buy the gun, then a mental “break” occurs and that gun is used in the wrong way. Other than mandating some sort of annual mental illness test in order to keep a handgun – which would likely not be legal,  much less practical – I don’t know how it could be policed.

There are so many new treatments for mental illness, but identifying the mentally ill and getting them access to and mandating treatment can be difficult.

I don’t have the answer. I’m not sure anyone does. But what I do know is that I am tired of innocent people being killed by someone who is mentally unstable.

We must find a solution!

The Rational Fear of Flying

For me, the simple thought of flying on an airplane fills me with dread. Even driving to the airport makes my stomach feel tied in knots. I get horrible motion sickness when flying (medication doesn’t help) but that’s not the only reason why I hate flying. I haven’t flown on an airplane since being on a horrible flight in January 1993. The plane on which I was flying passed through a massive line of unusual January thunderstorms and I think everyone on that plane thought we were not going to land in one piece. We were heading to a business meeting on the east coast and colleagues from Chicago were also flying there, on another flight about a half hour behind us. They flew through the same storm. Their flight was even worse than mine and some people on that flight had to be hospitalized for injuries. I swore on the flight home that I would never set foot on a plane again.

Since my last flight in 1993, air travel has become even more unsettling for many people. The planes crashing into the World Trade Center on 9/11 tightened security and that made the process of just getting on the plane to be a hassle. Stories of plane crashes in general are unsettling. But over the last year where planes have crashed or gone missing - Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March 2014 being the most notable – flying is becoming uncomfortable for even those who aren’t afraid to fly. The crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 this week, which currently is presumed to be a deliberate act, is a horrifying thought which brings the fear of flying to a whole new level.

The fear of flying can no longer be considered an irrational fear.

I’m not sure if there will be anything so critical that will force me to get on a plane. I do realize that no method of travel is 100% safe. But when I put my life in the hands of someone else – an airline, a plane, or a pilot – I want to have complete confidence that they will deliver me to my destination in one piece. I simply do not have that confidence any longer, not even a shred of it. I don’t think the earth will stop spinning if I never board a plane again. But each air tragedy breeds more people like me: not phobic, just those who have a reasonable and rational fear of flying.

Often: The “T” Is Silent

After going through the last several months with no issue causing me enough grief to complain about it here, I’ve finally hit a high level of annoyance with one thing. It’s a little thing really, but with each day it annoys me more. It’s the pronunciation of the word “often.” Despite some who believe that pronouncing the “T” is acceptable, I am here to state that, in my opinion, it is not. The most common pronunciation has the “T” silent (“off-fen”).

Here’s why I think pronouncing the “T” (“off-ten”) is incorrect: people don’t pronounce the “T” in similar words, such as listen, hasten, soften, etc. I know that the English language doesn’t always follow its own rules of pronunciation, but in this case, I think it should.

I’ve noticed that the pronunciation of the “T” seems to be spreading with news reporters, news anchors, and TV pundits.  I almost never hear it in TV shows (dramas/comedies) where actors are delivering scripted dialog, and who are likely being told HOW to say what they are saying. But news people are pronouncing the “T” more and more often (read "off-fen!").  Do they think it makes them sound smarter? In my opinion, it doesn’t. It sounds “off,” especially coming from people who make their living by talking in front of a camera.

So my suggestion is this: please hasten to read this, and listen to what I say. I don’t want to soften my message: The “T” in “often” is silent!

The Court of Public Opinion Shows Its Dark Side in Ferguson, Missouri

The death of Michael Brown at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri has ignited a firestorm of debate in the media and in social media. Things became even worse when yesterday the grand jury decided not to indict Darren Wilson for any criminal charges in Michael Brown’s death. Everyone has an opinion as to how justice should have been served, but everybody was not at the scene at the time Wilson shot Brown. Only the grand jurors saw all the facts of the case, yet people who were not there at the time of the incident nor who sat on the grand jury seem to think they know better.

In addition to the furor over the outcome of the grand jury, there were people peacefully protesting in Ferguson (and in other cities). Peaceful protests are a good thing and can help to bring change. But these protests turned to rioting, looting, vandalism, the burning of business, and more. How many of the people engaging in the non-peaceful activities actually live in Ferguson is not known, but it is suspected that many engaging in the violet behavior are simply opportunists taking advantage of the unrest.

This whole situation is sad in more ways than one.

Social media is a wonderful thing where people can share information. But social media can also spread misinformation. Television and print media also has contributed to fanning the flames by their continuous coverage and debate on the issue when they do not have all the facts. I think it is perfectly fine to discuss and debate situations like this but we have to stop trying cases in the media and having the court of public opinion pass judgment. While the public has an appetite for as much information as possible, it is simply not fair for the public to condemn anyone – either Michael Brown or Darren Wilson in this situation – before all the facts can be presented using the due process of the law.

There is no excuse for rioting, looting, vandalism etc. It sickens me that hard working people who had nothing to do with the Brown/Wilson incident have had their business destroyed. I hope that those people arrested for this behavior face the full force of the law.

There will always be questions when a police officer shoots another person, regardless of who is shot and who is did the shooting. And there SHOULD be. I’ve always been under the opinion that shooting to kill should be the last resort, but I also understand that police officers are often faced with split second life or death decisions. While police officers are not perfect, there isn’t any human being out there that is. In order for justice to be served, the court of public opinion is not the best place to try a case.

UPDATE: Here is a link to the New York Times with all the Ferguson Case grand jury documents.

Tiny Terrorists: Viruses and Bacteria

An outbreak of Ebola in Liberia. A toxic algae bloom creating bacteria which poisoned the water supply in Toledo Ohio with microcystin . These two topics made national news this past week, causing terror in people both internationally and regionally. Both situations were caused by tiny microbes that are invisible to the naked eye.

It is understandable why these news stories can cause  intense fear. It’s hard to fight something that one can’t see. The thought of the spread of Ebola can be particularly frightening to some because as of right now, the mortality rate is very high (reportedly near 90%) and there is no sure cure or vaccine. The 400,000 people in the Toledo, Ohio area without water for several days had to wonder if the contamination in the water could be fixed and if their water would be usable again. The millions of people who live on the shores of Lake Erie in the United States and Canada also had reason to be concerned as the problem could potentially affect the entire region.

But there is no need for panic. There is, however, a need for action.

Work is underway to both contain the spread of Ebola in the outbreak area. The experimental medication used on one of the Ebola patients who was brought back to Atlanta Georgia for care does bring a glimmer of hope. Ebola is not an airborne pathogen, and is transmitted by bodily fluids, so as long as great care is taken while caring for the sick, the risk of spreading the virus is low. The danger with Ebola is that one may not know they have been infected, with the incubation period taking between days and weeks. As the outbreak is concentrated in one area in Africa, people can simply avoid traveling in the region. My biggest concern is someone being infected traveling OUT of the area before they realize they are infected.

The toxic algae bloom in Lake Erie is a more immediate concern to me, but still should not panic anyone. The algae problem in Lake Erie has been an ongoing problem for many years. I live in Northeast Ohio only miles from the Lake Erie shores, and the area gets a lot of drinking water from the central basin of Lake Erie, not near Toledo.  But the concern over the algae affecting all the basins of Lake Erie is real. The algae growth continues to explode due to fertilizer and sewage runoff into Lake Erie primarily from the agricultural areas in the western end of the state of Ohio. The problem became serious in Toledo as their water is drawn from the shallowest end of the lake, and unusual weather conditions pushed the algae bloom westward and concentrated it even closer to the city’s water intakes. While weather was a factor, it is not the underlying problem. I can understand why no one wants to curb agriculture in Ohio, but clearly steps must be taken to stop using Lake Erie as an unlimited dumping ground for runoff from agriculture. Ohioans like me who live in more urban areas and get water from deeper areas of Lake Erie are safer but still not immune to the dangers of toxins from algae. Ohio legislators, working in tandem with those from Canada, should immediately work to place controls on what goes into the precious resource that is Lake Erie. Fertilizer runoff and sewage runoff may not seem as bad as the industrial pollutants which affected Lake Erie in the 1960s, but the effect is still the same. These agents are contributing to poisoning the lake and must be curbed or stopped.

These tiny terrorists - viruses and bacteria -  can only win if we let them. Human-made problems such as toxic algae blooms are fixable by humans. And even if a virus like Ebola can’t be completely eradicated right now, the best defense is a good offense. The worst thing we can do is panic.

“This Page Intentionally Left Blank” Is Intentionally Ridiculous

I know there are more important things in the world to complain about. But, for some reason, when I see a document with a page that is marked “This Page Intentionally Left Blank”, it annoys me to no end. I frequently see this phrase in legal documents, company annual reports/proxy statements, medical benefit summaries, etc. I understand that they don’t want someone to see a blank page and think that they are missing something, but really now, there has GOT to be a better way to do it other than printing “This Page Intentionally Left Blank” on it. Doing so means the page is now NOT BLANK. It make my head want to explode, the same way it feels when watching sci-fi on television when a paradox is encountered. How can a page be blank and NOT blank at the same time?  It can't - at least not in this universe, unless you are Doctor Who and are using your psychic paper.

Here are my suggestions for pages where one intends no information to be printed on a page (this also applies to the “this space intentionally left blank” statement for sections of a page where no printing is intended):

1. Put a big “X” on it.

2. Put a large “forward slash” on it

3. Substitute the phase “There’s nothing to see here, move along.”

4. Don’t leave it blank if it’s a page in the middle of a large document. Think of all the reams of paper you’d save.

5. Throw caution to the wind and LEAVE IT BLANK!

I understand that people who write legal documents, company annual reports/proxy statements, and medical benefits summaries think that the rest of the world is stupid, but I assure you that 99.99% of the population can understand a blank page. If you’re giving someone a complex document and that person can’t understand the concept of a blank page, that blank page is the least of your worries.
