Protect Yourself – Wear A Mask, Social Distance, Wash Your Hands!

Many states have re-opened after shut-downs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of those states were late to put in restrictions. Unfortunately, some people have used these re-openings as an excuse to go completely back to normal: no social distancing, no mask wearing.

That's a mistake.

Cases of COVID-19 are surging, and hospitalizations are rising. There are people who attribute the surge to an increase in testing, but that explanation doesn’t hold when looking at the  increase in  hospitalizations. The number of COVID-19 positive people being hospitalized has zero relation to the number of tests being conducted.

COVID-19 remains highly contagious and a serious illness. Do yourself a favor and PROTECT YOURSELF from those people who don’t care whether they get the virus or spread it to others. Wear a mask when you are out in public. Continue to stay away from large crowds. Wash your hands after being out in public and keep your hands away from your face unless you know your hands are clean. And when you do have to go out to shop for groceries or anything else, respect the personal space of others and keep 6 feet away. Others may not care if they get the virus, but it’s up to YOU to protect your own health and the health of those that you love.

This is not about your rights – show some concern for your fellow human beings! The only way COVID-19 can be stopped is if some people stop being selfish. Protect yourself and help protect others. Wear a mask in public. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. It’s not hard to do!

This Surreal COVID-19 World

It’s been a few years since I’ve written anything for this blog. There was – and still is – so much bad news with the Trump administration that I’d be glued to my computer, writing all day just to keep up. I had no desire to spend my time with such a flood of negativity.

But the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic brings me out of retirement as things become more bizarre by the day. It’s like living in an old Twilight Zone episode, but in color.

COVID-19 has proved to be highly contagious and deadly, and trying to both evade it and to halt its spread has changed how we live. It’s a surreal world.

Social distancing – staying at least 6 feet away from others – began here in Ohio very early in March. Schools were closed and large gatherings were discouraged.  Large events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade were canceled. To make sure that people didn’t decide to hit the bars instead, those were closed too, along with restaurants, in order to prevent groups of people gathering. (Carry-out is still allowed.) Hairdressers, salons, and tattoo parlors were also shut down.  Even the Catholic Church told people not to come to services. The hope was that people would stay home or not congregate in groups,  discouraging the spread of the virus. Hand washing after being out in public for anything was a must, and then more hand washing, and more hand washing…

Very early in this process, the hoarders were unleashed and certain items like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, isopropyl alcohol, and face masks disappeared from stores everywhere. People were told that face masks weren’t necessary, and that masks should be reserved for medical personnel and first responders to help keep them safe. (This would later change.) Anything that was purchased at a store should be wiped down and/or disinfected once brought home. Anything those things touched – like grocery bags on your kitchen counter – should be disinfected and the bags tossed out. Overnight, a new breed of germophobes was born.

It wasn’t long before Ohio officially shut down all non-essential businesses and stressed that people should be staying home unless to go out for essentials like food. Grocery shopping, which already was difficult because of that 6-feet guideline, became more stressful as store shelves emptied quickly of everything else like milk, eggs, meats, soup, etc. The grocery stores are still trying to recover, and it may be some time before inventories get back up to normal. More people are making their own meals and eating at home, which alone stressed inventory levels at the grocery stores. Many stores later decided to put limits of certain items to prevent further hoarding and to help insure that everybody may have a chance to get critical items. (Toilet paper is still hard to get.) I never thought I’d see the day where I’d go into a grocery store week after week and see so many shelves looking sparse or bare.

Now that we’ve been instructed that we SHOULD wear a mask when going out to shop, grocery shopping has become even more surreal. Even with the 6 foot distance between us, now with our mouths covered, we can’t even smile at our fellow shoppers, and instead flee when anyone comes too close.   Stores are limiting how many people can be in a store at one time to minimize contact. Going out for groceries or any essentials is anxiety-filled and depressing.

While all this is going on, we are assaulted with constant news of the spread of COVID-19 and the resulting illnesses and death. Some states, slow to enact social distancing and closing of businesses were hit very hard, especially dense populated areas like New York City and New York state. Hot spots began to pop up – such as New Orleans, possibly because of the large gathering from Mardi Gras. Watching the news has been a constant stream of COVID-19 news and it can become overwhelming.

One positive benefit – fewer cars are on the road and fewer airplanes are flying, so the air appears clearer.

President Trump initially downplayed the virus When it became obvious that this real, he was forced to react. I think it’s too little to late. Now we must listen to his daily, rambling press briefings and his words don’t offer much substance or solace.  It's alarming.

Clearly the effects of COVID-19 are not over yet, but life as we know it has changed, probably forever. It may be hard to go out in public to shop without looking at others as they are riddled with unknown germs. This virus will probably turn many people into antisocial germophobes. And there will be some items that people may be tempted to overbuy in the future, just to be sure they have some on hand in case of another emergency (e.g. toilet paper!).

I have high hopes that all this effort will put an end to this virus, or at least slow it down enough so the medical profession can better react, and to buy some time until a vaccine is developed. But one thing I know for sure: things will never be the same.

Trump as the “Law and Order” President? Hardly

I haven’t written anything in months. Truthfully, the Trump presidency has been such a train wreck that if I started posting my opinions, I would never stop writing. That does not mean I’ve taken my eyes off what Trump has been doing – and not doing.

He’s not doing anything constructive. His administration and the Republican controlled Congress hasn’t been able to get anything done. Their attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) fizzled miserably. This was in part to the Republicans being tone-deaf as to what the people of the United States want and need. The fact that Trump's coziness with Russia plus his namesake son getting himself tangled in alleged illegal activity in June of 2016 and then lying about it hasn’t helped either. The steady drip, drip, drip of information which only revealed more lies on Trump Jr.’s part was bad enough, but today there are reports that Donald Trump – the president - has raised the issue to his legal team about pardons – for himself, his family and others related to the investigation. He's also expressed regret for putting Jeff Sessions in the job as Attorney General because Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation.  So much for law and order!

A president simply cannot pardon himself; this would be what a dictator would do. And. it appears that if he pardons any member of his family, campaign staff, or administration, as it relates to the investigation of the Russian meddling in the election, those people would not be allowed to plead the Fifth Amendment when testifying and/or would not be protected from any other charges outside the Federal level. Again, so much for "law and order."

The bottom line is Donald Trump is acting like a guilty person trying to find any way to keep himself out of jail.

I can only hope at this point that the investigation into Trump and his campaign’s activity moves at light speed and impeachment proceedings take place with (hopefully) a quick decision on the part of Congress to boot Trump out of office. I don’t think this country can suffer the damage much longer. Trump’s “law and order” sounds like “NO law and order.”

Trump’s Twitter Storm (Falsely) Accuses Obama of Wiretapping

President Donald Trump had a Saturday morning tweet storm on March 4, 2017. Here’s what he said, in five tweets:

“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy! "

"I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!"

"Is it legal for a sitting President to be "wire tapping" a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!"

"Just out: The same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone."

"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

Of course, Trump had no proof to back up his claims, which were quickly rebuked by an Obama spokesperson.

These tweets show Trump’s ignorance. A president cannot order wiretaps; those laws have been on the books since the 1970s after the Nixon era. But Trump is now in a trap of his own making. He can’t prove his allegations, which make him seem even more paranoid and crazy. If there WERE wiretaps, they would have been initiated by federal investigators and been approved by a panel of judges who set the bar very high in order for a wiretap to be granted. This would mean that Trump and/or members of his campaign showed some signs of illegal activity. Either way, Trump loses.

I’m all for investigating Trump’s (baseless) claims, which could have the side benefit of uncovering the truth about his and/or his campaign’s ties to Russia. Trump’s Twitter rant should only expedite an investigation, something that I doubt he really wants. I am appalled at Trump’s apparent lack on control and also his desire to vomit his often wild opinions onto Twitter on a regular basis. He may think he is diverting attention from the issue of his ties to Russia, but his apparent insecurities have only drawn more attention to it. In my opinion, this is not the sign of a person with a stable mind. I encourage Congress or any federal agency to open an investigation into these claims that Obama wiretapped Trump, and when they are proven false, they can then open an investigation into President Trump’s mental ability to govern.

Trump’s ”Extreme Vetting” is an Extreme Disaster

President Donald Trump created another mess in his first week in the White House. His campaign promise of “extreme vetting” of immigrants took an ugly turn when he issued an executive order banning the entry into the United States for citizens of seven Muslim nations (Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen) without having any process or procedure in place.

Chaos ensued during the execution of the haphazard executive order. There was no advance notice or planning for the airports to enforce the order. Green card holders were blocked entry, some people with valid U.S. passports were threatened with deportations until judges intervened. Large numbers of protesters descended on major airports, as did lawyers there to protect the rights of those detained and to help them through the process.

It was a disaster.

The Trump administration has failed miserably in its first week. It seems that this group of people who have zero experience in running the government are just making things up as they go along. It’s unprofessional and it is frightening. In their desire to keep a campaign promise of “extreme vetting”, they completely forgot to actually come up with a process to vet people coming in to the country. There was no preparation before executing. Trump always touts his business prowess, but no smart business person would ever change their operating process or profile without having a plan in place.

It’s clear to me that Trump is just winging it. Same for his administration. I’m becoming worried that our government is in the hands of a madman, along with a staff ready and willing to enable him.

Donald Trump – The Twilight Zone President

After Donald J. Trump was elected president in November, the last few months felt like a never-ending episode of “The Twilight Zone”. I sometimes expected Rod Serling to appear as a ghostly apparition and give an opening monologue to every news cast. Not a day goes by without the press highlighting some of the lies and falsehoods that are coming from Trump and his administration. Not 24 hours passed after the inauguration, President Trump and his Press Secretary Sean Spicer made incorrect statements about the size of the crowd attending the inauguration. Spicer flat out lied, stating incorrectly that “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period”,  after which he didn’t take questions from the press. The full transcript is here:”Washington Post: Sean Spicer held a press conference. He didn’t take questions. Or tell the whole truth. “ .

The next day, on NBC's "Meet The Press", one of Trumps advisors, Kellyanne Conway, attempted to categorize the falsehoods as “alternative facts” (see the clip below). She also said she may have to “rethink our relationship”, a clear threat, in my opinion, to cutting off members of the press when the Trump administration doesn't like when the press calls them out for their lies.

The entire campaign has been full of lies, misstatements, falsehoods, and any other synonym one can think of for not being truthful.

Donald Trump and his support staff seem ill-prepared for the job. Their attitude continues to be hostile. I am embarrassed that these people represent the United Stated of America.

I’ve been silent for all these months;  if I wrote down everything that appalled me about this president’s and his staff’s behavior, I would be writing 24/7. I had to step back in the hopes that once inauguration day came, that I would see Trump and his administration grow up. Clearly, this won’t he happening any time soon.

It’s going to be a long, long 4 years… in The Twilight Zone.

Trump Wins, To The Dismay of Half The Population

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, but Donald Trump won the electoral votes. The whole electoral college issue will get dredged up again but I'll save that analysis for another day. (I wrote something on the electoral college in 2008: The Electoral College: Is It Necessary? )

The people have spoken, but the outcome was not what the majority of the people wanted.

Everyone put a lot of energy, heart, and soul into this election.  But it seemed to lack BRAINS. It’s hard to fathom how a candidate whose messages were tinged with bigotry, exclusion, and misogyny could have been elected to the highest office in the United States.

But here we are, and the cold hard fact is that we now have to live with it.

After spending the last 8+ years reading the repeated hateful rants of strangers, friends, and family about their dislike of Barack Obama as a candidate and as a president, I refuse to let the outcome of this election get me down. I don't want to be like those people who could never get over that election loss and who went out of their way to put down people who voted for Obama.

This doesn’t mean that I will be silent on things that I don’t like about our new president. My expectation will be as high as always. But I am not going to go into this new presidency with a chip on my shoulder from day one. I don’t have the energy for that and I don’t think it serves any good purpose.

I don’t know what this new leadership will bring but only hope that millions of Trump voters don’t find that they’ve been sold a 4 year supply of “snake oil.”  This country simply can't afford it.
